Going to Work: Connecticut

Going to Work: Connecticut (2021—) presents “day-in-the-life” vignettes of BlPOC business owners, or nonprofits that work hand-in-hand with underserved communities.

Funded by the Independent Artists Fund from the Free Center (Hartford) and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, these vignettes artistically visualize the process:

how a local kitchen staff prepares for service
how a from-scratch soap maker gets her soap to customers
how a local bike mechanic gets other bicyclists on the road again

Each feature visualizes “work” for the young, inquisitive mind, and contains family-appropriate text.

This community project aims:
to strengthen BIPOC advocacy and representation,
to push for childhood literacy,
and to support local economic/cultural goals.

However, a larger hope, is that my toddler learns to value others’ contributions to the community, to normalize neighborliness, and cherish the color of her skin.

The beauty of this project is its evolution as a vehicle of community awareness.

I plan on continuing this project with more editions, featuring more new and established, neighbors of our community.
